Caves of Athos

Russian Orthodox Chant from Valaam. The Megalynaria: My soul does magnify my Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour: Refrain: U are more honored than the cherubim and more glorious than the Seraphim. U who gavest birth to GOD the LOGOS without corrupition. Thee - the very Theotokos do we magnify.

Elder Paisios, When Sick, Was Attended To By Angels and Saints For A Week

Elder Paisios told a spiritual child of a wondrous event, recorded below, which occurred in his life:

Once, when I was at Holy Cross [Hermitage], I became seriously ill. It was a harsh winter, and snow had fallen so that no tree looked like a tree. Everything was smothered in white, the trails were gone, the birds were quiet, clouds and fog obscured Athos. I had no contact with the Monastery of Stavronikita, and I could not live more than a few days since because of the illness I was completely paralyzed. I was expecting the Lord to take my soul and lead it to the mercy of His compassion. I could not even make one cup of tea, nor light the stove, no did I have water to drink. My life was at the mercy of God. I said: "Behold Lord, in Your mercy I hope. Do not forsake me!"

After a few prayers which I mumbled with great effort, I saw appear in my cell angels and saints, sent by God. The grace of God had visited quickly. I thanked and glorified my Savior. I cried. One of the angels took care of the stove, another was preparing warm food, they were also bringing fragrant breads. I was in Paradise. What else did I want.

The saints began to encourage me with words of consolation and prayers. And only their vision gave me rest, empowering me and giving me hope. They stayed with me until I was well and able to take care of myself. Then they left. They stayed with me for a week. When after a time I arose and went outside my cell I looked around at nature with different eyes. Everything was illumined with the uncreated light of the Holy Spirit. I was not worthy, but the infinite goodness of God and his love manifested in this way.

In all I felt such grace filling me within that I would say: "Enough Lord. I cannot take anymore. I will burst. Either take me with You or dwindle the grace You have given me. If You give me so much grace now, imagine what is given in Paradise."

Elder Paisios

Guided By the Wing of an Angel - Elder Iakovos (Tsalikis)

People are blind and don’t see what takes place in church during the Divine Liturgy. Once I was serving and I couldn’t make the Great Entrance because of what I saw. I suddenly felt someone pushing me by my shoulder and guiding me toward the holy prothesis. I thought it was the chanter, and said to myself: "The blessed one, such irreverence? He entered through the Beautiful Gate and is pushing me?" I turned around and saw a huge wing that the archangel had laid on my shoulder, and that he was guiding me to make the Great Entrance. What amazing things take place in the altar during the Divine Liturgy! Sometimes I can’t handle it, and so I pass out in a chair, and thus some concelebrators conclude that I’ve got something wrong with my health, but they don’t realize what I see and hear. What wings on those angels, my child!

- Elder Iakovos (Tsalikis) (1920-1991)

Σου γράφω κάποιες σκέψεις. Δεν είμαι σίγουρος ότι θα τις λάβεις. Δεν έχεις κάποια διεύθυνση. Δε ξέρω που βρίσκεσαι και στο κάτω- κάτω ποιος είσαι Εσύ. Ο κόσμος δε μου λέει σχεδόν τίποτα για Σένα. Δε Σε γνωρίζει και ούτε που θέλει να Σε γνωρίσει. Προσπάθησα να μάθω κάποια πράγματα για Σένα, αλλά δεν κατάφερα τίποτα. Ούτε τουλάχιστον τα' όνομά Σου δε προφέρουν οι άνθρωποι που βρίσκονται γύρω μου. Και τότε, Χριστέ, πώς να Σε βρω; Που βρίσκεσαι; Ποιος είσαι;

Και με πονάει το ότι πάντοτε φαίνονται χαρούμενοι και ευτυχισμένοι. Το χαμόγελο εμφανίζεται στα χείλη τους. Φαίνονται να ζουν τη ζωή τους. Εγώ όμως δεν μπορώ να αισθανθώ έτσι. Ίσως δε ξέρεις πόσο συχνά με βαρύνει η λύπη, η αδυναμία, η μοναξιά ...;

Ίσως θα ήθελα να είμαι σαν αυτούς ...; Αλλά κάτι από τα βάθη της καρδιάς με σταματάει! Συχνά αισθάνομαι εγκαταλελειμμένος ανάμεσά τους. Αισθάνομαι σαν ένα νησί λύπης και πόνου στο μέσο ενός "ωκεανού ευτυχίας". Γιατί αυτοί μπορούν να είναι ευτυχισμένοι κι εγώ όχι; Ποιος κάνει λάθος Χριστέ; Αυτοί ή εγώ; Αν υπάρχεις γιατί δεν έρχεσαι να μου δώσεις μια καθαρή και σίγουρη απάντηση;

Όσοι δεν έχουν ιδέα για Σένα, δεν ξέρουν τίποτε άλλο από το να διασκεδάζουν, να ζουν τη ζωή τους και τα νειάτα τους. Αλλά με εμένα τι θα γίνει; Σαν να έχω στη ψυχή μου ένα παιδάκι που κοιτάζει γύρω του τους ανθρώπους και του έρχεται να κλαίει ...; δεν καταλαβαίνω συχνά λόγους και συμπεριφορές ...;

Γιατί μόνο τα μάτια μου έχουν δάκρυα πόνου; Μόνο εγώ πρέπει να κλαίω; Μόνο εγώ δεν έχω το δικαίωμα να είμαι ευτυχισμένη. Μήπως Εσύ μ' εμποδίζεις να είμαι σαν τους άλλους; Και γιατί το κάνεις αυτό; Ίσως δεν καταλαβαίνω τι περιμένεις από εμένα ...; Ίσως δε μπορώ να διακρίνω το θέλημά Σου ...;

Όλοι μου ζητούν, σχεδόν με υποχρεώνουν να είμαι σαν αυτούς ...; Αλλά Εσύ δε λες τίποτα. Απολύτως τίποτα ...; ούτε μια λέξη! Και πώς να ξέρω τι θέλεις από εμένα; Τρέφομαι με δάκρυα και πάλι με δάκρυα ...; Δε μπορώ να κλάψω μπροστά στους φίλους μου. Ξέρεις καλά ότι κοντά τους προσπαθώ να χαμογελώ και να φαίνομαι ευτυχισμένος. Ενώ αν κάποια μέρα δεν καταφέρω να υποκριθώ τον ευτυχισμένο και η λύπη μου πιέζει όλη μου την ύπαρξη κανείς δε με ρωτάει τι έχω. Άραγε δεν τους ενδιαφέρει; Μήπως δε βλέπουν και δεν καταλαβαίνουν;

Αγαπώ το Θεό, αλλά δεν ξέρω πώς να το αποδείξω ...; Αρχίζω να πιστεύω ότι τα πάντα είναι μάταια! Ποιος μπορεί να τα καταλάβει όλα αυτά; Σε ποιόν να παραπονεθώ;Παλεύω με τον εαυτό μου και προσεύχομαι σε Σένα. Κανείς δε με μαθαίνει πως και τι πρέπει να σου πω. Προσεύχομαι όπως μου έρθει. Έφτασα να κρύβομαι ακόμη κι από την οικογένειά μου. Οι γονείς μου χαίρονται όταν πηγαίνω στη ντισκοτέκ, αλλά δε χαίρονται όταν προσεύχομαι. Ποιος έχει δίκιο, Ιησού; Και γονατίζω στα κλεφτά και ψάχνω λόγια. Ίσως πιο πολύ κλαίω. Τι θέλεις να σου πω; Πιστεύω ότι ξέρεις τα πάντα και δεν έχεις ανάγκη τα λόγια μου, αλλά ωστόσο αισθάνομαι ότι με ακούς. Και αν δεν αισθανόμουν ούτε από Εσένα έλεος και αγάπη, είμαι σίγουρος ότι θα τρελαινόμουν από τον πόνο και τη μοναξιά. Ίσως δεν προσεύχομαι καλά. Ίσως και να μην προσεύχομαι καθόλου. Αλλά προσπαθώ. Πρέπει! Επειδή δε μπορώ να είμαι σαν αυτούς που δεν προσεύχονται ...;

Για Σένα γνωρίζω ότι δεν μπορείς παρά να συγχωρείς και ν' αγαπάς. Ακόμη ξέρω ότι στο πέρασμά Σου από τη γη το κάθε δευτερόλεπτό Σου ήταν ένας ωκεανός πόνου. Δε γέλασες ούτε μια φορά! Ίσως να χαμογέλασες λίγο ...;Ξέρω σίγουρα ότι έκλαψες ‡ όχι για σένα αλλά για τους άλλους. Και ξέρω ότι δεν υποσχέθηκες σε κανέναν στη γη ευτυχία, εδώ και τώρα. Υποσχέθηκες όμως τα καλύτερα για την Βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Αλλά γιατί όλα αυτά; Τελικά δε μπορείς να δώσεις κάτι για τη θλιμμένη μου εφηβεία; Δεν αξίζω ένα χαμόγελο και μία ώρα ευτυχίας;

Δεν έμεινε σχεδόν τίποτα καθαρό σ' αυτόν τον κόσμο. Σου γράφω ειλικρινά ότι προσπαθώ με όλη μου τη ψυχή να πιστέψω σε Σένα. Και αναρωτιέμαι αν θα τα καταφέρω ...; Ο κόσμος που δημιούργησες θα έπρεπε να είναι καλός. Έτσι τον θέλησες, έτσι τον αγάπησες. Αλλά τώρα τι καλό υπάρχει σ' αυτόν; Μέχρι και το χορτάρι, η ομορφιά ενός λουλουδιού και το χαμόγελο ενός παιδιού «τσαλαπατούνται» ή και αγνοούνται. Και τότε τι και ποιος με βοηθάει να πιστέψω σε Σένα;

Εάν Εσύ, Ιησού, ζούσες για μια μέρα στην κοινωνία που εγώ ζω, τι θα έκανες; Αλλά ποιος μπορεί να μου πει; Όλοι χαίρονται γύρω μου, εγώ δεν τα καταφέρνω. Ώρες-ώρες απελπίζομαι Ιησού. Αξίζει να υποφέρω κι αν ο κόσμος έχει δίκιο όταν μου λέει ότι δεν υπάρχεις, ότι είσαι ένας μύθος; Μήπως δεν κάνω τίποτε άλλο από το να χάνω τις χαρές και τις ικανοποιήσεις της νιότης; Μήπως μετά το θάνατο δεν υπάρχει τίποτα; Μήπως δε θα είμαι ευτυχισμένος και στην άλλη ζωή;

Θα ήθελα να τα λέω όλα αυτά σε Σένα. Αλλά μερικές φορές μου φαίνεται ότι είσαι πολύ μακριά! Γιατί άφησες μια τόσο μεγάλη απόσταση ανάμεσα σε εσένα και σε εμένα Ιησού; Γιατί κάποιες σπάνιες φορές αισθάνομαι ότι μ' αγαπάς, ότι με συγχωρείς, ότι με βοηθάς σε κάθε στιγμή της ζωής μου, ενώ τις πιο πολλές φορές αισθάνομαι ότι ούτε δεν ξέρεις εάν υπάρχω. Μήπως επειδή αμαρτάνω και οι αμαρτίες μου Σε απομακρύνουν και σε λυπούν; Μήπως πιστεύεις ότι μου αρέσει να βυθίζομαι στη λάσπη, τη βρωμιά την οποία και εγώ σιχαίνομαι και θέλω ν' απαλλαγώ απ' αυτήν μια για πάντα;

Σε παρακαλώ και κάτι ακόμη ...; Να μου πεις ποιος είμαι και ποιος ο σκοπός μου στη γη. Οι άλλοι με ειρωνεύονται όταν ακούν αυτή μου την επιθυμία. Εσύ μ' έφερες σ' αυτόν τον κόσμο; Και τι περιμένεις από εμένα;

Υπάρχει Ιησού ζωή μετά το θάνατο; Την απάντηση δε μπορώ να τη βρω στους γύρω μου. Αυτοί ζουν μόνο για το σήμερα. Για να ικανοποιούν τις ορέξεις και τις επιθυμίες τους. Δε σηκώνουν τα μάτια τους πέρα από τον ορίζοντα, πέρα από το αύριο. Είναι αλήθεια ότι κάνουν πλάνα για το μέλλον. Σε πλάνο όμως διανοητικό και υλικό. Μου φαίνεται ότι θεωρούν τους εαυτούς τους, αθάνατους, ποτέ δε θέτουν το θέμα του θανάτου. Ποιον να πιστέψω; Βοήθα με να πιστέψω ...;

Ενώ Εσύ, Χριστέ, δε λες τίποτα. Δε θέλεις κι Εσύ να υπερασπιστείς τον εαυτό Σου;

A Word on Anger

Man today lives under such overwhelming pressure that his nerves are strained to the limit, and even the slightest provocation arouses in him the sin of anger.

Causes for anger could be the child who does not listen to us, or the husband or wife who contradicts us, or the driver who cuts us off with his car, or only seems to us to cut us off, giving a motive for us to be roused to anger.

Even if, through self-restraint, our anger is not outwardly expressed or is not heard by the one who provoked it, it is still a sin, because it harms our soul and our heart It is an action against one’s own self, under the temptation of the devil to be angry.

The savior warns us in severe terms concerning anger that gives birth to verbal conflicts and the use of abusive words.

I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire (Matt 5:22).

…No one thinks evil without corrupting the heart in which God should dwell…

[….]

I counsel my penitents that before they express their anger, be it in speech or gestures, be it only mentally, to utter three or five times, “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” And if they say the prayer quickly and inattentively under the oppression of anger, then they should concentrate with humility upon the word “sinner,” and their anger will abate. Many of them have succeeded inn making their life, their family relationships, their relations with other people, and even their interior life change for the better.

All the conflicts in the world have their origin in unabated anger. One is angry and wounds the other, who then responds with greater violence and strength. Once this chain is begun, it cannot be stopped except through the appeal of prayer––genuine prayer.

The Name of Jesus is sweet to utter. It casts our the demons and brings the angels back into the heart, into the mind, and you will bear yourself in meekness before others.

Fr. George Calciu (1925-2006) a great Romanian Orthodox confessor and spiritual father.

Receiving the Light of Christ - Seraphim of Sarov

Our aim is to know God in a direct way, not intellectually or through reason. This is often referred to as receiving the light of Christ. When we receive this light we experience a sense of joy. When it is a light sent by the devil we feel a bit of agitation or obscureness.

Saint Seraphim says,
The Christian heart, when it has received something divine, does not demand anything else in order to convince it that this is precisely from the Lord...
Saint Seraphim also gives many pointers about how to prepare to receive this gift of light.

He says,
To receive and behold in the heart the light of Christ, one must, as far as possible, divert one's attention away from the visible objects. Having purified the soul beforehand by repentance and good deeds, and with faith in the Crucified, having closed the bodily eyes, immerse the mind within the heart, in which place cry out with the invocation of the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; and then, to the measure of one's zeal and warmth of spirit toward the Beloved, a man finds in the invoked name a delight which awakens the desire to seek higher illumination.
What is important to remember that this gift comes after we have purified our heart and soul of its attachment to the passions of the body and one is committed to a life of ongoing repentance and good deeds, including participation in the sacraments of the Church.

Saint Seraphim goes on to describe this gift.
When a man beholds the eternal light interiorly, his mind is pure and has no sensory representations, but, being totally immersed in contemplation of uncreated goodness, he forgets everything sensory and wishes not even to see himself; he desires rather to hide himself in the heart of the earth if only he not be deprived of this true good--God. This is the gift that is available to all who are willing to cooperate with God and undertake the necessary preparation.

Saint Seraphim of Sarov

- Γέροντα, πως κάνετε ευχή για ένα θέμα;

On Amassing Wealth For Old Age While Neglecting the Wealth of Grace

By St. Nikolai Velimirovich

In ignorance, many people labor more to avoid suffering in old age and terminal illness than to avoid the torments of hell in the life after old age and death.

Such was the case of an unmarried and avaricious man who, from year to year, and with ever greater passion, amassed for himself unnecessary wealth. When asked why he strove so much to pile up excess wealth he replied: "I am gathering it for my old age. This wealth will heal and feed me in old age and sickness."

And indeed, his foreboding came true. In old age, a grave and long-lasting illness befell him. He distributed his accumulated wealth to physicians so they would heal him, and to servants so they would care for him and feed him. His wealth was soon spent, and the illness continued. The physicians and servants abandoned him, and he fell into despair. His neighbors brought him bread until his death, and he was buried at the expense of the community. He had used his wealth for that which he had intended it.

God had even done for him according to the man's will. God had sent him the illness that he had, in a sense, desired, and for which he had prepared great wealth. Nevertheless, all his wealth was unable to alleviate his sufferings in this world - so with what would he be able to alleviate his sufferings in the other world? Nothing, if he took with him neither faith, nor hope, nor charitable deeds, nor prayers, nor repentance!

Someone saw a departed man in the great glory of Paradise, and asked him how he had become worthy of that glory. The man replied: "In my earthly life I was the hireling of an evil-doer who never paid me. But I endured all and served him to the end, with hope in God." Then the onlooker saw another man in even greater glory, and when he asked him, that one replied: "I was a leper, and to the very end I offered gratitude to God for that." But no one saw in the glory of Paradise the man who had amassed money for illness in old age.

USELESS KNOWLEDGE AND IDLE CURIOSITY

 Saint Nicodemos The Hagiorite

Just as it is necessary to guard the mind from ignorance, so is it equally necessary to protect it from the opposite, namely from too much knowledge and curiosity. For if we fill it with a quantity of information, ideas and thoughts, not excluding such as are vain, unsuitable and harmful, we deprive it of force, so that it is no longer able to understand clearly what is useful for our true self-correction and perfection. Therefore, in relation to the knowledge of earthly things, which is not indispensable, even if it is permissible, your attitude should be as of one already dead. Always collect your mind within yourself, with all the concentration you can, and keep it free of thoughts about all worldly things.

Let tales of the past and news of the present pass you by, and let all the changes in the world and its kingdoms, be for you as though they did not exist at all. If anyone brings you such news, disregard it and turn it away from your heart and imagination. Listen to what St. Basil says: "Let listening to worldly news be bitter food for you, and let the words of saintly men be as combs filled with honey.” Listen also to the words of David: "The proud have digged pits for me, which are not after thy law" (Psalm 109:85). Love to hear only of spiritual and heavenly things and to study them, and wish to know nothing in the world except our Lord "Jesus Christ, and Him crucified" (I Corinthians 2:2), save His life and death and what He demands of you. Acting thus, you will act in a way pleasing to God, Who has for His chosen and beloved those who love Him and try to do His will.

All other inquiry and investigation is the offspring and food of self-love and pride. They are the nets and shackles of the devil; he sees the strength and firmness of will of those who pay attention to spiritual life, and strives to conquer their minds by means of such curiosity, in order to gain possession of their mind and will. For this purpose, he suggests to them thoughts that are lofty, subtle and wondrous, especially to those who are sharp-witted and quick to make lofty speculations. Attracted by the pleasure of possessing and examining such lofty thoughts, they forget to watch over their purity of heart and to pay attention to a humble opinion of themselves and to true self-mortification; and so they are enmeshed in the bonds of pride and conceit; they make an idol of their own mind and thus, little by little, without realizing it, they fall into the thought that they no longer need any advice or admonition from others, since they are accustomed in all cases to hasten to the idol of their own understanding and judgment.

This is a very dangerous thing and not easily cured; pride of mind is much worse than pride of will. For pride of will, being visible to the mind, can sometimes be easily cured by forcing it to submit to the yoke of what is good. But when the mind is firmly grounded in the self-relying thought that its own judgments are better than all others, who can cure it in the end? Can it ever obey anyone, if it feels certain that the judgments of others are not as good as its own? When this eye of the soul -- mind -- with whose help man could see and correct pride of will, is itself blinded by pride and remains uncured, who will cure the will? Then every thing within is so disorganized that there is neither place nor person for applying a healing poultice. This is why you must hasten to oppose this pernicious pride of mind, before it penetrates into the marrow of your bones. Resist it, curb the quickness of your mind and humbly subject your opinion to the opinions of others. Be a fool for the love of God, if you wish to be wiser than Solomon. "If any man among you seems to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise." (I Corinthians 3:18)
